The Media Center, located on the second floor mezzanine, houses more than 7,400 audiovisual media programs, including DVDs, CD-ROMs, audio cassettes, computer software, video cassettes and other nonprint materials. Audiovisual equipment is also provided in the Media Center. You will be instructed on how to use the equipment when you wish to view or listen to a program.
Twelve IBM PCs are available in the Media Center for student use for word processing and learning software. Printing is available. The computers are not connected to the Internet. Computers are available on a first come, first serve basis. Classes are frequently scheduled in the Media Center and have priority in equipment use. Schedules are available at the Media Desk.
North Campus telecourse tapes are distributed and collected by the Library Circulation Department, at the main circulation desk on the first floor, at the beginning and end of each semester.
Telecourses are handled by the Instructional Communications Department (ICD), Room 204, Gleasner Hall. Please contact John Birks, Coordinator of A-V Services, at (716) 851-1282.
DISABLED STUDENTS
For students with disabilities, audiovisual equipment is available on the first floor. A Kurzweil Reader, magnifier, Magnisight machine, television with closed captioning/DVD/VCR, audio player/recorder, CD and cassette player that has the capabilities to read specialized CDs (DAISY format- Digital Accessible Information SYstem) and cassettes (four track), and typewriter are located at the bottom of the Media Center’s main staircase. A computer on an adjustable height table, with Jaws, Zoom Text software and the EaseReader program (it has the capabilities to read the DAISY format CDs and allows the students to see the text on the screen in front of them) is located near the Reference Desk in the main reading room. Students with disabilities will be trained to use the equipment by Disabled Student Services staff. Students who will be using this equipment are aware that they need to bring their own headphones.
Please call Heather Hewson, Disabled Student Counselor, at (716) 851-1495 or 851-1487, Room 217 Spring Student Center.
BORROWING MEDIA
Most videos, DVDs and CDs circulate to all ECC students, faculty and staff for a loan period of two weeks. There is a limit of two items per transaction.
Students may view/listen to all other media (cassettes, filmstrips, etc.) in the library, but may not borrow these AV materials for off-campus use. Students may borrow media for use in a class presentation, if they present a note from their instructor. Materials should be picked up before class and returned immediately after class.
Students may request AV materials from other campuses for viewing in the Media Center.
ECC faculty members may borrow materials from the North Campus Media collection. The loan period is four weeks with one renewal. Faculty will be sent overdue notices if materials are not returned by the end of the loan period. Materials on reserve for another faculty member may not be borrowed.
Local residents (including alumni), SUNY students, and LAP InfoPass cardholders may use AV media in the library.
We do not lend AV materials to libraries outside ECC.
MEDIA RESERVES
Faculty may place audiovisual materials on reserve in the Media Center for their classes. Please contact Joseph Reger, 851-1276, for information.
PURCHASE OF AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS
Faculty may request that the library buy films or other audiovisual materials. Catalogs from audiovisual producers for media are available in the Media Center or in Room D112. For a specific request, we will need full title, full vendor address and telephone number, vendor order number of the item, and shipping cost. Closed captioned media are always purchased when available. Library staff can also help you identify appropriate AV materials. Please call Katherine Hill, (716) 851-1278.
Audiovisual materials purchased with library funds or donated to the library are housed in the Media Center and are available according to the borrowing policy above.
