Description
“Those who do not have power over the story that dominates their lives, the power to retell it, rethink it, deconstruct it, joke about it, and change it as times change, truly are powerless, because they cannot think new thoughts.”—Salman Rushdie. This workshop will feature readings of short stories and essays about the world of work, broadly defined as who we are as people and professionals, and how these identities impact our emotional and psychological selves and our individual and communal well-being. As you embark on the endeavor of finding new work for yourself, you are doing nothing less than creating a new professional narrative for yourself, a story that will unfold and redefine you as a new person. While you may not have liked English in high school or college, you do love stories, and this class will revisit narratives in a new way. We begin each class with a short reading exercise designed to illustrate the power of story to disrupt our expectations, for why read anything if a work only confirms what you already think? We’ll turn then to one or two stories that illustrate work in complex and variegated ways and discuss them openly and interpretively. The final workshop activities are short group exercises designed to inventory the stories in relation to your own professional goals. Requirements: To attend the workshop you must come prepared and have read the material fully. Please email the instructor, Bob Durante, for links to or copies of the stories for this month at rdurante@wdcinc.org .
