ECC Enrollment Guide

Introduction

ECC 101 will guide you through the Erie Community College (ECC) admission, placement testing, advisement, registration and orientation process so that you are prepared to have a successful enrollment experience.

Once you have completed this tutorial, you will:
(1) know the criteria for being admitted to ECC
(2) submit all necessary documents for admission
(3) be aware of all placment testing requirements and/or waivers
(4) be aware of the remaining steps for advisement and course selection
(5) prepare a folder with materials for the enrollment process.

As you proceed through ECC 101, you will be asked a series of questions about your enrollment plans. Your answers to these questions should be recorded on a checklist. Print the checklist now, fill it out as you go through this guide, and bring it with you whenever you visit a college representative. This checklist will be used to help
you build an enrollment folder by listing all the items you need tocomplete, provide, or submit for admission to ECC.

It is helpful to know the academic program you are interested in pursuing at ECC as you go through this tutorial. If you are not sure what is available, go to ECC's list of degree programs. Think about what topics interest you and your career plans. This information will help your advisor provide the appropriate guidance in selecting courses and programs of study. If you would like further assistance in selecting a career path and/or academic program, visit the Admissions Office to schedule an appointment with an admission's counselor.

Steps in the process:
1. Admissions
2. Placement Testing
3. Advisement and Registration
4. Orientation

ECC 101 will provide you with these resources:

With these resources, you can:

Admissions

The first step in the process is applying for admission. All new students to Erie Community College must submit all three of the following:

You can complete and submit an ECC application online. The online application is completed and submitted through the ECC website. You must personalize the ECC website before applying online.

To complete the application process, you will need to collect and submit appropriate documents to the Admissions Office.

Admissions Office:

City Campus: (716) 851-1155
North Campus: (716) 851-1455

These questions will help you complete the ECC 101 Enrollment Guide:

Have you already submitted an application?

If yes, what date did you apply?

Are you a resident of Erie County?

If not, have you submitted the out of county certificate?

Some students follow a different process or need additional information before going through the enrollment process.

Veteran

If you are a Veteran or currently serving in the military, you may be exempt from assessment. You should contact the Veterans Affairs Office for details about admission and special requirements.

You will also need a copy of your DD214 or active duty orders.

Permanent Resident / Alien Card Holders

Permanent Resident / Alien Card holders must bring their card to the Admissions Office inorder to be admitted. If a student does not bring the original card, their application will be incomplete.

If this is your first time attending college, you will need to request an official copy of either your high school transcript with date of graduation or HSE (High School Equivalency) certificate with test scores. You need an unofficial copy of your high school transcript or HSE certificate in your enrollment folder.

If you have previously attended college, you will need an official copy of transcripts from each college that you have attended. You need an unofficial copy of each transcript in your enrollment folder.

The official copy of these documents should be sent or delivered to any ECC Admissions Office. If you deliver your transcript to Admissions, they will make you an unofficial copy for you to place in your enrollment folder.

What is your status? Are you a first-time college student? Or, have you previously attended college?

If you are a first-time college student:

Have you completed high school or the HSE?

Have you requested an official copy of your high school transcript to take to the Early College Start representative at your high school?

If you've previously attended college, have you requested an official copy of your college transcript(s) be sent to ECC's Admissions and Records Office? Do you have copies of your college transcript(s) in your enrollment folder?

Placement

The second step is to determine whether you need to participate in the ECC Placement Test. All students who are enrolling in ECC as a candidate for a degree or certificate program must take the placement test or receive a waiver.

On your checklist, note which of the following assessment tests you have taken:

ECC Placement test
SAT
English and/or Math advanced placement (AP) Exam
English 3 or Math course 3 Regents Exam(s)
None of the above

For the test(s) you have taken, have you requested that the scores be sent to ECC?

For the test(s) you have taken, do you have a copy(ies) of your assessment scores in your advising folder?

ECC Placement Tests

ACCUPLACER
ACCUPLACER is a nationwide computerized placement test consisting of questions in reading comprehension, sentence skills, and math skills. ACCUPLACER is not timed. There is however, a timed thirty-five (35) minute essay writing portion on the test. Most students complete the test in two hours. Although ACCUPLACER is computerized, no prior computer experience is required.

ABILITY TO BENEFIT (ATB) (For Non-High School Graduates)
One of the requirements for eligibility for federal financial aid is that all applicants must have received a high school diploma or a HSE. Students who have not earned one of those documents have the option of being tested to show an ability to benefit from a college education. This test will consist of questions in reading comprehension, writing and numeric skills.

BILINGUAL PLACEMENT TEST
This test is for individuals who are dominant in a language other than English. A prospective student from this group who does not have a high school diploma may also take this test, which meets the Ability to Benefit (ATB) requirements. Please call (716) 851-1079 to schedule an appointment.

English Waived

You may be waived from the English portion of the Placement Test if you are a high school graduate or hold a HSE, and meet any one of the following criteria. Select all that apply to you:

Math Waived

You may be waived from the Math portion of the Placement Test if you are a high school graduate or hold a HSE and meet any one of the following criteria.

If you meet the criteria for being waived from the English or Math portion of the Placement Test and would like to obtain a waiver, please submit official high school and/or college transcripts, or an official SAT Score Report to the appropriate campus Admissions office.

After Admissions reviews your test scores, transcripts, and other pertinent documents, you will be notified whether you should take the ECC placement test (or not).

If you are not waived from taking the placment based on your document review, you will be advised by either an ECC admissions counselor or placement office of your obligation to take your placement test.

If you are waived from the English and/or Math placement test, you will be notified via a waiver form that will be included in your acceptance package.

We recommend that you bring a copy of your test scores or your placement test results letter in your enrollment folder.

If you have previous college level English or Math courses please bring a copy of your college transcripts.

If you take ECC's placement test and score below the minimum requirements for matriculation at ECC, you may still take classes but only as a non-matriculated student. As a non-matriculated student you are not eligible for financial aid and can only register for up to 11.5 credit hours. If you find yourself in this situation, contact Pathways to Success program at your campus.

Special accomodations are provided for students with disabilities. Will you need special accommodations?

ECC's placement testing staff works very closely with the Disabled Student Services (DSS) offices at each campus to provide the necessary accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Contact the DSS office at your campus prior to scheduling your test to discuss your needs and responsibilities.

Advisement and Registration

The third step is to attend one of the scheduled Advisement and Registration dates. After completing the application process and placement testing process, you will be invited to Advisement and Registration. During Advisement and Registration you will meet with an ECC faculty member who will help you determine which program and courses are right for you. After being advised, you will go to the Registrar's office to enroll in your selected classes.

Proper educational planning increases the chances that you will succeed at ECC. You should consult a faculty advisor from your program anytime you have questions or concerns regarding progress toward your degree.

A student whose goal is to transfer to another college should speak with one of ECC's Transfer Counselors within the first semester.

ECC has a Student Support Service Center at each campus to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have about your future at ECC and beyond. This is a one-stop-shop for questions and concerns regarding college, career, and personal issues. If you are not sure who you should talk to about a problem you are having, this is the place to go.

Whenever possible you should bring your enrollment folder and the enrollment checklist with you whenever you are visiting the campus.

You should make sure that all the necessary items are in your enrollment folder.:

It will be helpful for your faculty advisor to know the reason you are interested in attending ECC so he or she can better meet your needs.

Registration

ECC's faculty are here to assist you in making decisions about your education, but they cannot and should not make the decisions for you. Therefore, there is some important information that you need to know in order to make good decisions when registering for classes. The following is an overview of information you need to know to register successfully.

What is in the Course Schedule?

Each semester, ECC publishes a Course Schedule. The ECC Course Schedule contains vital information about the courses being offered during a given semester. In the schedule, you will find a list of courses grouped by subject area, where and when classes are offered, and much more.

Being able to find information in the course schedule will make the registration process much easier for you.

Why is the Course Schedule important?

You may view the Course Schedule on the ECC website or obtain a free copy of the Course Schedule at any ECC campus. The Course Schedule lists many important dates: registration dates, payment deadlines, holidays, course withdrawl deadlines, and semester beginning/ending dates.

You should review a Course Schedule and make sure you know how to find relevant information before you meet with your advisor.

What is a credit hour?

Each course is assigned a number of credit hours. The number of credit hours for any given course can be found in the Course Schedule. In the following example, the course titled Introduction to Business is worth 3 credits.

Example:

CALL# CAT# SEC COURSE TITLE CREDIT
51521 BU400 02 Introduction to Business 3

How long is a semester?

The Fall and Spring semesters at ECC are 15 weeks. However, ECC also offers a variety of other options for winter and summer sessions. Talk to your advisor about the advantages and disadvantages of each semester.

How many courses should I take?

Most students find they need to spend two hours on homework and assignments outside of class for each credit hour they take. For example, a typical semester-long, three-credit hour class would require a commitment of approximately 9 hours per week. A full-time student enrolled in at least 12 credit hours per semester would need to commit approximately 36 hours to his/her studies per week.

Speak with your advisor to determine how many credit-hours to enroll in.

What are the different types of classes?

ECC offers traditional on-campus classes as well as courses with alternative delivery formats such as online or Web-based, hybrid courses with both online and classroom components, interactive video courses, and others.

You can discuss with your advisor which types of courses best meet your scheduling and learning needs .

The classes offered in alternate formats are called Distance Learning courses.

Distance Learning Delivery Methods

Online Course – The majority of the course is done over the internet with little or no on-campus time.

Hybrid Course – The class is a combination of online and seated time.

Web-Assisted Course – The class is a seated course where the instructor uses online materials and activites to supplement the classroom work.

How do I select courses?

A faculty advisor will help you select courses during Advisement and Registration.

The college catalog provides information about course selection and lists all of the required courses for each major and program. The college catalog also lists the core-curriculum for students who plan to transfer to a four-year SUNY institution.

Your Class schedule

When you have successfully registered for classes, you will receive your class schedule/tuition bill. This piece of paper also shows the money you owe for. Students who register for classes and do not pay the tuition by the stated deadline are dropped from the classes, so make sure you are aware of your payment deadlines.

Orientation

The fourth and final step is attending ECC's New Student Orientation.

Erie Community College is dedicated to your success, whether you're coming straight from high school or returning after some time out of school. After you have particiapted in advisement and registration you will be notified by mail of orientation information. For more information, contact the Admissions office of the campus you plan to attend. A special orientation is provided for evening students.
