GIS Certificate GIS Projects Course Offerings

The development of these curriculum projects was funded in part by the National Science Foundation (grant DUE#97-52688).

GIS training for participating faculty was provided by the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Geography Department.

The National Science Foundation Grant for GIS Curriculum Development was intended to accomplish a two-pronged approach to GIS technology education at Erie Community College. The first was to create a GIS Certificate Program for students to complete as part of their degree program or as a stand-alone certificate. The second approach to GIS technology education is a GIS Infusion Program, to train faculty in a variety of curricula at ECC to be able to use GIS in their own courses within specific modules or applications.

By creating both GIS-specific courses and GIS modules in a variety of other courses, the National Science Foundation grant promotes geographic information system skills development in a broad spectrum of ECC students. This will help us create a GIS skill base in the Western New York area that will be able to meet the growing need for GIS technicians and analysts as the use of GIS technology expands in local business and government agencies.

We welcome questions, comments, and suggestions about our curriculum projects and on our informational web page.  For the GIS Certificate Program, please contact Michael Courneen, GIS course instructor.  For the non-geography GIS projects or the web page itself, please contact Dr. Jason L. Steinitz.
